With egg laying rates dropping as winter approaches, it’s not possible to notice an egg or two missing on any given day. Moreover, it’s been a while since our surrogate mother in residence Buffy has actually laid eggs — that’s OK, she contributes in other ways.
See anything unusual about the bale of straw in the back left corner of the chicken sunroom? Me neither.
Upon closer inspection, however, that straw bale turns out to be Buffy’s secret nest!
I love that this crazy little chicken — the top of her head is about 6″ off the ground when she stands — decided to fly up on top of this bale to make a nest, rather than use one of the four nesting boxes in the coop. (The divas have been sleeping in the nesting box; maybe that’s a turn-off for Buff?)
