The holidays merge seamlessly into “birthday season” around here, as both kids have birthdays in January. This year we hosted parties three weekends in a row, which pretty much consumed the month as far as project work is concerned.
The day after the third of the parties we decided to get the “seed room” set up so we could start some seedlings.
Mysteriously labeled “cat room” on the house plans, this is a little interior basement utility space with a light, a fan, and a sink, and nothing else. It seemed like a perfect place to start seeds, so we hauled an old wire shelf in from the shed and hooked up some small fluorescents we had.
It’s too early to start seedlings for outside, of course, so we limited ourselves to things that could be usefully grown indoors: herbs and greens, for the most part. That was three weeks ago, and for the most part things sprouted and thrived.
Today we transplanted and moved the larger of the seedlings out into the lower level sunroom, which gets great sunlight at this time of year. I built some quick frames to hold metal rods from which we’ve hung some larger lights to supplement.
All of this is a great reminder that spring is really going to come. With that in mind, we’ve figured out what we want to grow this year, have varieties chosen, and have our seed order ready to go. The unknown state of the garden makes this a very uncertain year, but we’re going to give it a shot regardless.
